A food desert is an urban neighborhood or rural town without access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. Nearly 24 million Americans are affected, including many here in the Bay Area.

To raise awareness about this prevalent issue, Naked Juice and Wholesome Wave teamed up with well-known ambassadors from around the country and launched the #DrinkGoodDoGood social media campaign—just take a photo holding a fruit or vegetable and tag a friend, and Naked Juice will donate 10 pounds of produce to those in need!

D.C.-based chef José Andrés, Chicago-born actor, musician and philanthropist Common, Los Angeles chef Michael Voltaggio, San Francisco chef Tyler Florence and Miami chef Michelle Bernstein are some of the influential leaders working on this pay-it-forward project.

Edible Silicon Valley recently met with chef, restaurateur and TV personality Tyler Florence to learn more about Drink Good Do Good, how people can support these efforts in the Bay Area, and snap a few photos and videos for Facebook and Instagram.

Tyler’s goal is to get the word out to as many people as possible here on the West Coast and start an ongoing dialogue that will turn into a philanthropic domino effect. We live in a food-interested area with access to the highest quality ingredients, chefs and places to dine, yet there is a large population of people who do not eat fresh produce on a regular basis. There’s a huge disparity right here in our backyards.

Tyler encourages us to take our blinders off and practice social awareness. We can appreciate the bountiful food scene and have compassion for those in need.

How can you help? Post a photo onto social media! For inspiration, check out our post from the interview with Tyler last week on Facebook and Instagram.

Tyler volunteers at the SF/Marin Food Bank, another great way to give back and connect with neighbors.

Stay tuned for more about Tyler’s efforts and how to get involved! And post!
